NSW: Corruption-free police force never suggested - Carr
New South Wales Premier BOB CARR is standing by police commissioner PETER RYAN, despite
the top cop's admission his approach to reforming the Police Service was mistaken.
In an interview with The Bulletin magazine published today, Mr RYAN says if he had
to start the reform process over he would do it differently.
Mr RYAN's also conceded corruption could not be stamped out.
However Mr CARR has backed his commissioner, saying it had never been suggested the
force would be corruption-free.
Mr CARR says Mr RYAN has done an excellent job in improving the service since his appointment
in the mid-1990's following Justice JAMES WOOD's Royal Commission.
And while the service might never be freed of corruption, he says Mr RYAN has helped
make it more corruption-resistant than ever before.
